Chester Zoo to close aquarium

The Liverpool Echo reports that members of Chester Zoo have been informed of the zoo’s intention to close its aquarium building in 2026.

The building first opened in 1952, and for 70 years, it has housed brittle stars, anemone, seahorses, blind fish, clownfish and pipefish, as well as more unique aquatic creatures like coral. Nevertheless, the building seems to have reached the end of its serviceable life, as explained in a letter sent to members:

“With such advancements in building methods, technology and requirements for modern zoos, our expert team of structural engineers agree that from 2026 our aquatic species in the aquarium will be finding new habitats to flourish in, under the care of our dedicated aquatic team.”

That doesn’t mean these aquatic creatures will be leaving the zoo, however. The letter points out how the zoo has been setting up aquatic habits at various other locations, such as in the elephant house, the Monsoon Forest, Spirit of the Jaguar and the Okapi House.

Of course, the zoo has much more to offer than just the aquarium, its zoological gardens span 128 acres and serve as home to over 31,000 animals. If you’re coming to Chester to study, or already at the university, Chester Zoo is a must-see attraction, and you’ll still be able to experience the original aquarium before it closes.

If you also need student accommodation near Chester University, you’ll find a range of quality options, including deals where utility bills are included in the rent.
