Northgate development brings more homes to the city centre

Cheshire West and Chester Council has announced that the second stage of the Chester Northgate Development will see the addition of a brand new residential area to bring more homes back to the city centre.

Phase one of the development has already added to the previous success of the nearby Storyhouse by adding a new indoor market, a cinema, a multi-story car park, office suites and a range of bars, restaurants, and cafés. The next phase of development will focus on adding new homes and vibrant public spaces to improve the overall appeal of the area.

Phase 2 will cover an area just under that of three football pitches, with this including the former Gateway Theatre, Merchant House, Hamilton House, Goldsmith House, and the old Forum shopping and office complex. The council believes that a new residential area will bring a rare opportunity to introduce long-term benefits to the city centre, such as reducing emissions by bringing people closer to work and leisure destinations and supporting economic growth in the city centre. Councillor Nathan Pardoe said about it:

“Delivering on the ambitions of the One City Plan, we will create high-quality homes, support local businesses and grow our local economy by creating a new community of residents living in the city centre.”
