Plans unveiled to renovate historic Chester pub

The premises of the Ye Gardeners Arms pub in Boughton date back to the 1800s, yet it has been vacant for five years. Now, plans have been submitted to renovate the building and turn it into a modern pub and restaurant while preserving the building’s historical significance.

The owners of the Porta Tapas Bar on Northgate Street, brothers Joe and Ben Wright, are behind the planning application after buying the building, which had been advertised for sale in January for offers around £250,000. The Grade II listed building will need some extensive modifications for its proposed future, however. The new owners want to replace the extensions to the rear, which they say are poorly constructed and not compliant with current building regulations. The plans also propose converting the first floor from accommodation to pub and restaurant use. The application says:

“The proposed works will update the building for a modern-day public house/restaurant. The proposed alterations to the building will modernise the facilities and improve the public offer, to ensure the continued use of the building and make it viable and sustainable in the long term.”

After Cheshire Live published the news, many readers reacted positively about the pub getting a new lease of life after being closed for five years. If the application is successful, it will add to Chester’s vibrant hospitality scene, which attracts many people to study and work in the city.
