Report on social and economic change cites Chester University

A report from the Purpose Coalition, together with partnering universities, has concluded that universities are vital to achieving social and economic progress, with the University of Chester being highlighted.

According to the report, which is titled How Universities are Breaking Down Barriers to Opportunity, the effects of universities go beyond their basic educational mission and function as sources of opportunity.

It uses case studies to illustrate how far-reaching universities’ “opportunity footprints” are, and suggests that policymakers should recognise the wider economic and social contribution of universities.

Indeed, universities are big employers, and can boost job creations in local communities.

The report cites the University of Chester as contributing to economic growth in the region, and it discusses how students are provided with opportunities for entrepreneurship, as well as the institution’s programmes for employability and careers.

The university’s vice-chancellor, Professor Eunice Simmons, said she was happy to be working with the Purpose Coalition to enable everyone to maximise their potential, adding:

“I’m proud to see the work carried out by colleagues to improve opportunities for our students and our region shared in this report. It is a priority for us here at Chester to further enhance the social mobility and inclusivity for our students to ensure they are 'world-ready'…”
