Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWaC) is being asked to add another 10 years to the lease for Chester’s Storyhouse, which includes a library, cinema, and theatre, as well as a bar and restaurant.
Storyhouse is based in the former Odeon Cinema, which is a Grade II-listed Art Deco building built in 1936. It was established in 2017 with a 20-year lease on the building, but it is now seeking a 10-year extension to this to allow it to stay in the building until at least 2047. Storyhouse is home to over 130 community groups and also runs events in Chester outside the building, such as the Grosvenor Park Open Air Theatre.
A report presented to the cabinet of CWaC said the extension would enhance the partnership between Storyhouse and the council, adding:
“As a provider of arts and culture in the borough, regionally and nationally, Storyhouse needs security of tenure to continue to expand its offer through the age groups to ensure continuity of footfall and look for areas for growth via funding opportunities and a diverse and vibrant arts and culture programme.”
If you’re a student aged 25 or under, you can get your free Young Storyhouse card and enjoy free tea and coffee there all day when you use their free co-working space to study, as well as £5 cinema tickets for all films and other discounts.
